In the last session of Garden School, we touched on the fundamentals. Now we dive deeper into plants, garden techniques, and more.  This year's sessions cover topics like: 

• Designing beautiful, climate-appropriate landscapes using native California plants, bold Australian species, striking South African selections, and diverse succulents that thrive in regional growing conditions.

• Supporting biodiversity and pollinators by integrating plants that provide habitat and resources for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife.

• Growing fruit for your table with step-by-step guidance on choosing and growing low-chill stone fruits, apples and pears, along with citrus, banana, and other subtropical fruits suited to SoCal microclimates.

• Understanding plant biology and seasonal nuance to time planting, pruning, and fertilizing for maximum garden health and productivity.

• Conserving water intelligently with smart irrigation systems, hydrozone strategies, and seasonal water management techniques.

• Building healthy, living soil by understanding the biology behind the soil foodweb and how to support soil life with compost, mulch, and amendments.

• Turning organic waste into garden gold with compost methods for every space—from simple piles to bins and worm farms.

• Choosing and using the right tools to make gardening more efficient, enjoyable, and successful, with guidance on what’s worth the investment.

• Combining eesthetics and science to create gardens that are not only beautiful but also functional, resilient, and restorative to the environment.

Each month, Nan dives deep into a key topic that builds on the knowledge you've already learned. You'll go into more depth on plants and methods Nan touched on in your first course together.
